My Crochet Journey
Blog Introduction
This blog will be about my day-to-day life as a beginner small business owner.
I am a complete noob when it comes to business and owning one. But I hope my determination to have a successful crochet business will help me through this long journey.
The Moment I Thought A Crochet Business Was A Good Idea.
Because of my consistent practice and constantly stepping out of my comfort zone like when I would try to learn new patterns that were way too advanced for a beginner like me, I progressively leveled up my crochet. It’s also thanks to trial and error and with the help of all those tutorials and tips & tricks videos, I was able to raise my crochet skills quicker than I expected.
It took time for me to become confident in my work. It took a lot of time to gift my work let alone sell it. I procrastinated a lot but one day I took the plunge and gifted my first item which was a triangle shawl I gifted my mom. She loved it! When I gifted it to her, a friend of the family was there too and immediately asked for one as well, going as far as to pay me for it. I didn’t know what to do, but I did know that it felt great! It was then that I decided to turn my crochet into a business.
One day randomly, an idea popped into my head. I wanted to learn to crochet or to knit. So, I googled knitting and crochet and google told me crochet was easier to learn. Next thing I know I’m searching on Amazon for a crochet starter kit. I ordered one, searched YouTube for an easy to follow “How to crochet For Absolute Beginners” video (my choice was Bell Coco’s video) and got to learning.
It was like a revelation. Suddenly I had something special I felt proud of, something with purpose, something I can use to contribute to the family. I no longer felt useless, instead I felt fulfilled. I finally had a dream. I now know what it means to have a dream, what it feels like to have a dream, what it feels like to be willing to shed blood, sweat, and tears for a dream I want to succeed.
What Crochet Means To Me
I’m hoping this blog will not only help myself in organizing my thoughts and feeling as I travel down this road of being a small business owner but also help someone else who might be curious or are on the same road as I am.
The Goal Of This Blog
My Introduction
My name is Britney and my dream is to have a successful crochet business. I should mention that this wasn’t a long-time dream since I was in high school or anything. Instead, I didn’t know how to crochet up until a year and a half ago and I learned on my own through YouTube, watching tutorial videos and practicing everyday all day. I literally breathe crochet.
Where I Started
As I mentioned before, I didn’t start out as a crocheter in high school or anything. To be honest, since I was in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future. I dabbled with different ideas, mostly involving my hobbies in art including art school which had me settling for photography, but I was never happy or even comfortable with my choice. Then life happened. I didn’t finish art school and instead became a stay-at-home mom while my husband worked hard for us and has been taking great care of us.
I’ve matured my thinking is different and so are my goals. As my children got older and became more independent, I began to feel listless, useless, and felt like I was slowly withering away. My husband worked hard every day while I stayed home doing nothing. I felt horrible. My mental health made it almost impossible for me to work and as I said my children didn’t need me as much anymore. It was a dark time for me.
Taking The Plunge
I honestly took a plunge into this. I started by commissioning my work to others and after finding out I have a talent in making a little of everything crochet has to offer, it was easy to spread the word about what I can do. I of course still consulted family and friends around me to ensure I stay on the right track in starting my business. Meaning when I had an idea about my business, I always asked for a second opinion. Especially with my naivety with this sort of thing. After doing a lot of research and watching even more YouTube tutorials this time business related, I didn’t skimp on the details. I still have a lot to learn and want you to join me as I do.
